History of IDB The Innovation and Design BLDG

boston design center boston ma

Come and see why so many pioneering companies and entrepreneurs work here. An interview is your opportunity to present your project, listen to the designer's observations and insights, and examine the designer's work. Be sure to discuss your needs, present your ideas and review their portfolio. Don't be afraid to ask questions about the designer's education and previous experience.

Spring Market

This meeting will wrap up the discussion of the design of a new community center in the Grove Hall section of Dorchester. The Innovation and Design Building (IDB) is a 1.4 million square foot mixed-use complex located in the Innovation District in Boston's Seaport neighborhood. This episode takes us inside the Grand Rapids Furniture Co. showroom. This episode takes us inside the newly updated Porcelanosa showroom.

BDC Presents: Showroom Showoff, Grand Rapids Furniture Co.

The eight-story Innovation and Design Building (IDB) complex was constructed on the Commonwealth Flats by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1918, and it originally served as a waterside storehouse for the South Boston Army Base. In its heyday during World War II, 50,000 people worked around the clock at the South Boston Army Base and neighboring South Boston Naval Annex repairing and overhauling American ships and warehousing and distributing a wide range of military goods and supplies. Before you meet with a designer, have a clear understanding of what your design objectives are.

Floor Plans

From hosting biotech incubators to established companies at properties like Innovation Square and 451 D Street, our building provide top-of-the line amenities and resources tailored to tenants’ needs. Housing 70 individually-owned showrooms, the BDC has served design professionals and their clients for more than 25 years, providing unrivaled product selection, customer service, and design expertise. The Boston Design Center is the epicenter of design in New England, featuring more than 350,000 square feet of home and contract showrooms representing the best in both domestic and international product lines.

Inside the New SoWa Art + Design Center in the South End

But it has recently welcomed a bevy of new showrooms, design studios, and architecture firms, too. Many have moved into 500 Harrison Avenue, a building that’s undergone significant renovations since suffering damage from a 2020 water-main break. Now, developer GTI Properties has rebranded the complex as the SoWa Art + Design Center, and—thanks in part to side effects of the biotech boom in the Seaport and Cambridge—this stretch of the South End is starting to feel like the hub of the city’s design community. With over 30 design showrooms and 1,200 brands and product lines, a visit to Boston Design Center is a must for interior design professionals. An interior designer can help you establish your design goals, formulate your budget, and create the basic structure from which your design will be realized.

Carnival Jubilee, Carnival's New Ship Coming To Texas In 2023, Goes On Sale

However, the massively creative options on the menus at both the Golden Mermaid and Dr.Inks, Ph.D. bars are absolutely worth a shoutout. The full-scale event wasn't offered during my sailing, but I'm giving the line points for both creativity and interactivity, as well as for recognizing how much its Texas audience values American football culture. After the show, "guests" (passengers) are encouraged to attend the "reception" (a dance party with the ship's DJ) in the ship's Limelight Lounge. If you're hungry, grab a bite at for-fee seafood eatery Emeril's Bistro 717, with a menu created by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse. Here, I'll run through the specifics of what I truly enjoyed while on board, and a few things that gave me pause.

Cruises

As you can see Carnival Cruise Line builds new ships regularly with a new ship coming out almost one per year. However, Some of the newer ships are also moved from a sister brands or could even be a refurbished older vessel like we’ve seen with the Sunshine Class ships. Carnival Sunrise is the second ship of the Sunshine Class, and it is a sister ship to Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Radiance. The ship has a capacity of 2,984 passengers based on two per cabin, and its Godmother is Kelly Arison. Although the renovated ships are as good as new, they are not as large or have some of the newest features available on the Excel Class ships like Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration.

Renamed Carnival Ships

The ship is sailing 7-night Western Caribbean cruises with calls at Roatan, Honduras, and Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico. Beside BOLT, Carnival's roller coaster at sea, Carnival Jubilee will have the six-zone concept that pioneered on Mardi Gras with two zones that will be specific to the ship -- more details on those to come. The deck plan also features the side atrium, which does double duty as a gathering and entertainment area. What's nice about Carnival's newer ships is that they offer a choice of more cabin categories than the line's older vessels. On Carnival Jubilee, options include inside cabins, outside rooms with windows, balcony accommodations and mini-suites, which are basically larger balcony cabins that have more closet space and can sleep up to four people.

CARNIVAL CELEBRATION: GREAT FUN TOGETHER, ALL POWERED BY LNG

Cocktail recipes inspired by precious metals and gemstones, drinks served in exquisite glassware, plus garnishes like edible glitter to remind you of sunlight streaming through the waves from up above! All this glitz pairs perfectly with live music, making this the perfect place to relax with an elegant drink before or after dinner. The port of call will open with one dock capable of handling Carnival’s largest ships, the 6,000-passenger Excel class. It’s one of two ships sailing year-round out of Tampa, along with yCarnival Pride. She received a check for $5,000 from Carnival and a future day pass for the resort, which won’t normally be open to visitors from the island.

Onboard Activities

Carnival Horizon stands out for its groundbreaking features, such as the Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse|Brewhouse, and the first-ever Dr. Seuss-themed water park. Carnival Celebration is the second ship in the popular Excel Class and sister to Mardi Gras. Discover the latest and greatest Carnival ships that are currently out at sea. Carnival has made things a little confusing for Cruise Addicts by completely renaming and refurbishing some of its older vessels. If that wasn’t confusing enough, they have recently moved and renamed several ships from the Costa brand to Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival also has plans to move more Costa ships to Carnival in the future.

ADULTS-ONLY PRIVATE CLUB PORTAL

The ship is also the second Carnival vessel to bear the Celebration name. It left the fleet in 2008 before ending up with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line as Grand Celebration, which was scrapped during the industry's pandemic pause in 2021. Now, Carnival Celebration resurrects the name to offer more fun to more people. "This beautiful, innovative ship will bring an entirely new cruise experience to our guests, and we've got some great surprises to fun it up in ways we know they are going to love." And this one, nestled on the south side of Grand Bahama island, is designed exclusively for Carnival guests. It’s perfect for adults, families with kids… everybody who appreciates fun and natural beauty.

The spot sits just off the coast of Florida near Freeport in The Bahamas and promises to be the ultimate playground for cruise passengers. Carnival Cruise Line’s latest addition is poised to offer expansive staterooms, multiple dining options ranging from casual eateries to fine-dining restaurants, and entertainment venues catering to all ages. Carnival Cruise Line is embarking on an ambitious expansion of its cutting-edge Excel-class fleet with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art cruise ship. Carnival Celebration, the second vessel in the line's Excel class, will sail its inaugural voyage from the U.S. on Monday.

And even those reading lights, recessed into the wall so you can read in bed without waking anyone! Better comfort, lighting and storage all spring from a deep understanding we've developed around how people actually use their staterooms… and how small changes to the room add up to make the experience that much better. (Enough USB charging ports for everybody’s stuff? Oh yes!) Thoughtful, guest-centric design is how we do it… and all this in-room convenience comes paired with a fresh new look. Here’s the most affordable way to experience Carnival Jubilee™, without cutting even a single corner in the comfort department. And staterooms aboard Carnival Jubilee™ are packed with innovative changes to both. A nine-day round-trip cruise from New York to the Bahamas departing on Feb. 2, 2024, starts at $449 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival's website, though prices vary by itinerary, stateroom, and other factors.

The welcome area is the place to book the day’s activities including cabanas, water sports and shore excursions. The area will also feature a Bahamian-themed fountain and ice cream shop. It’s the third name drop by Carnival following the reveal of welcome area Paradise Plaza and adult-friendly area Calypso Lagoon. The final two space names and details, which will be a family-friendly area and an adults-only private area, will be revealed later. Offering a new set of onboard “wow” factors plus Carnival Cruise Line’s signature venues and restaurants, Carnival Jubilee was far and away the top vote-getter in the Best New Cruise Ship category of the 2023 Cruise Hive Awards. Carnival Jubilee, the latest addition to the Carnival Cruise Line fleet, was voted Best New Cruise Ship of 2023 in the annual Cruise Hive Awards.

At another show I attended solo, I found a lone seat in the stadium-style section of banquettes between decks 7 and 8. Even in this area clearly meant for show watching, I could not see all the action, and the noise from passengers wandering around Deck 8 and coming in and out of Bonsai Sushi was loud and distracting. We sampled a few of Celebration's specialty restaurants, and they also impressed. Rudi's Seagrill delivered an enormous cioppino and a Dover sole that was soft and moist. Emeril's Bistro 1397 wowed my husband with a flavorful ceviche, while I enjoyed hot-from-the-oven beignets. My kids slurped up pasta at Cucina del Capitano at lunch, and I heard others rave that the steakhouse was as good as I remember from other ships.

But the ship also offers some of the first real suites in the fleet, featuring separate living room and bedroom areas, bathrooms with separate tubs and showers, and walk-in closets. "Dear Future Husband" isn't the only interactive entertainment you'll find on board. Another is the Lone Star Tailgate, a three-hour pool deck event in tribute to the ship's Texas home port. You can walk from the Golden Mermaid bar (which boasts a giant wall mural featuring mermaids and hidden references to SpongeBob SquarePants) through an archway designed to look like a whale skeleton. Upon debuting, the Carnival Jubilee is set to sail from the Port of Galveston on a year-round basis.

According to Carnival, the venue incorporates playful designs, including a Ferris wheel- inspired ceiling feature, and casual seating areas, both inside and outside. When passengers step into Currents, they will be transported to “mesmerizing underwater worlds,” the company added, in a space that changes from day to night and throughout the cruise. The new Carnival Jubilee will become the third and final vessel in Carnival’s XL Class. Made up of the largest ships in the fleet, the class also includes the 2020-built Mardi Gras and the 2022-built Carnival Celebration.

And even if you’re just passing through, know that you’ll definitely be back later. Center Stage features a rotating selection of live entertainment, while Grand View Bar serves up great drinks with plenty to feast your eyes on. In Grand Central you're never far from cups of comfort at JavaBlue™ Café, great dining spots like Bonsai Sushi™ and Bonsai Teppanyaki™, plus feel-good entertainment like Piano Bar 88™ and The Punchliner Comedy Club™. The Summer Landing zone on Carnival Celebration is the ship's living room, and my family found ourselves there often. My son was a big fan of the foosball and table shuffleboard, and my daughter loved the aft pool, with its loungers in the shallows. We swung by Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse for breakfast and barbecue dinner, played trivia, sampled beers brewed right on board and watched other people watch sports at the Heroes Tribute Bar.

The ship accommodates 5,400 guests in double occupancy and up to 6,500 if fully booked. More than 6,000 guests joined her maiden sailing, providing a glimpse into the level of high demand this vessel seems destined to enjoy. This is especially true if you have a group that wants to eat together but has differing opinions about which casual venues each person wants to hit.

Guest services and shore excursions have been moved out of this central area to a more out-of-the-way spot on Deck 8 aft. The water park has three different slides to suit all tastes plus a splash park, and the mini-golf course is a fun time and actually tricky. I saw everyone from little kids to adults enjoying the basketball court, and Carnival lost the ridiculous outdoor exercise equipment from its Vista-class ships and kept only the games cruisers actually play. For its 50th birthday, Carnival Cruise Line gave itself a celebration — specifically, the just-unveiled Carnival Celebration, the second ship in the line's Excel class. And it's clear that Celebration isn't your mother's, or grandmother's, Carnival cruise ship, taking the company into its next half-century with a more modern, updated version of Carnival's "Fun Ship" style.

Carnival Cruise Line is the largest cruise company in the world, based on passengers carried, and the flagship brand of Carnival Corporation & plc. Known as “America’s Cruise Line” for carrying more Americans and serving more U.S. homeports than any other cruise line. The Bonsai Teppanyaki™ experience is set to delight guests aboard Carnival Celebration®. Take a little time out of vacation to sit down to a selection of tempting appetizers, before your chef prepares the main course featuring selections of meats, tofu, fish, shrimp or lobster… right at your table. In the teppanyaki tradition — and Carnival’s tradition of fun — expect an interactive, satisfying meal full of surprise and delicious delight. The Bonsai Teppanyaki™ experience is set to delight guests aboard Carnival Jubilee™.

Carnival Reveals BIG New Details About Celebration Key New Private Island

The 140,600-gross ton ship carries 3,260 guests in double occupancy, and is operating alternating 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. Celebrity Ascent is the fourth vessel in the line’s Edge class, and features the popular Magic Carpet, a movable cantilevered deck that functions as a restaurant and bar. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to the Center Stage Bar on Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Cruise Line's newest ship and the third in the Excel Class. The bar — along with several other dining venues and the onboard shops — wasn't open during my two-night sailing prior to the ship's first voyage with paying passengers. But each time I passed by it in Grand Central, one of the ship's six zones, I couldn't help staring. By day, panoramic windows offer port and ocean views to guests enjoying coffee and a snack from the JavaBlue Cafe across from Celebration Central's lower level.

Take a peek at Carnival's newest ship, Celebration, which embraces the cruise line's past and future

It's also a beautiful place to say “I do,” with an event pavilion for hosting weddings, vow renewals and other special celebrations. We’ve taken the vast world that exists underneath the waves as the inspiration for Currents™… but why limit your imagination to what’s real? Let the fantastical world of sunken cities, mermaids and sea monsters swirl around your mind as you enjoy new bars, dining spots and live music venues that carry this vibe.

NEXT-LEVEL FUN IS MAKING BIG HEADLINES

And for military folks — or folks who just want to raise a glass to them — please report to Heroes Tribute™ Lounge for great service. We know you guys like soft serve too, so we're throwing in a Swirls™ location — one of two! Grand Central is designed to make an impression… and that’s good because it’s going to be your first one! You can count on Carnival Jubilee’s atrium to set the vacay vibes for your whole cruise. Look up and you’re honestly in for an eyeful — floor-to-ceiling windows, 14-foot LED screens, a ceiling of 1,400 color-changing lights… everything points to BIG FUN happening in here.

Plus, it has an adjustable shower head with a removable wand and a shave bar in one corner — thoughtful touches. In line with Carnival’s commitment to sustainability, the new ship will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), significantly reducing its carbon footprint by reducing emissions of sulfur dioxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. This new addition, which will span approximately 344 meters and boast a gross tonnage of around 180,000, is set to enhance the cruising experience for over 6,400 guests. The ship is also Carnival's second vessel powered by cleaner-burning liquefied natural gas. They scrapped many of their older ships in order to save money and focus on newer and more profitable ships after the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown.

New with the Excel class is Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken venue serving variations on the fried-chicken-and-biscuit theme from breakfast through the late afternoon. Carnival's pizza is some of the best in the biz, and the customizable tacos and burritos at BlueIguana offer something for everyone. The midship pool brings back Dive-In Movies on a giant LED screen and is surrounded by a two-deck RedFrog Tiki Bar, Street Eats, BlueIguana Cantina, Seafood Shack and, one deck up, Guy's Burger Joint.

The ship also hosts a new Italian street party with live music and street food at the ship’s Lido pool. The ship, which can accommodate nearly 5,000 guests, will spend the summer sailing four-, five-, six- and eight-day cruises to Bermuda, the Caribbean, New England and Canada. In September, Venezia will start sailing between eight and 12-day itineraries to the Bahamas, Eastern Caribbean and Southern Caribbean, with select sailings also including a stop in Miami.

Carnival Jubilee first look: Throwback decor, creative cocktails and an ocean theme

Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there, and they all welcomed each other with smiles. The excitement was palpable, which bodes well for passengers since the crew is prepared and the ship is ready. Conflicting styles that worked surprisingly well together were a theme that kept repeating on board. Carnival Jubilee is, after all, a throwback ship, designed to pay homage to some of the fleet's original vessels.

Meet Carnival Jubilee™

new carnival cruise line

TPG was on board Carnival Celebration's second sailing and the first from its Miami home port to the Caribbean. Here, I'll outline what's new, what we loved and what could use some tweaks. Additionally, the group operates three shipyards in Finland and Germany, where the current Excel-class ships were constructed. The more than 2,600-stateroom ship is made up of six zones, with festive touches and nods to its history incorporated throughout. Guests enter through the atrium in Celebration Central, with a ceiling designed to mimic a confetti cannon, courtesy of roughly 1,400 colorful light fixtures.

To find uncharted flavors, never before seen on land, we had to dive deep. Far below the waves we met a mermaid who swims the depths of the oceans to find the long-lost treasures of ancient civilizations. You’ve gotta trust us… or you can join us at The Golden Mermaid™, where amazing drinks are just the beginning.

Love it or hate it, there are throwbacks everywhere you look on Carnival Jubilee. A forever fan of Farcus — I even have one of his piano bar tables in my living room, rescued from Carnival's former Tropicale — I think the design elements (the colors, the decor, the mixture of styles) are brilliant. I loved how the atrium area is now more incorporated into the daily flow of the ship, rather than an area you pass by to get somewhere else. The shows are stunning, with the action extending beyond the stage, including into the air. They make full use of the high-tech capabilities of the performance space.

This space has good looks, but you can’t miss the innovative tech packed into the zone! Six huge LED “windows” — and the awe-inspiring wavy LED ceiling — will help transport you to mesmerizing digital underwater worlds. These screens are the center of the local entertainment, with interactive audio-visual elements that let kids, adults and everyone enjoy and add to the under-this-world seascapes! Plus there’s Seaquest, a show that virtually transforms the zone into a submarine on an adventure we’ll enjoy together. And with everything to see, don’t forget about the fantastical flavors, with Emeril’s Bistro 717™, Dr.Inks, Ph.D.™ and The Golden Mermaid™. The Carnival Jubilee also brings back the extensive dining options available on its sister ships.
